I got out early for an exploratory on a trail I last hiked about 15 years ago. The Cape Horn Trail has changed a lot in that time. When I did it before on a Mazama hike and the trail had only been open a few years before, I remember we came back covered in mud. Folks have done a lot of work on this trail to improve it although I hiked it on sunny day I could see the mud pits were gone. Cape Horn always had great view points but before you had to walk up to the edge of a cliff to see them and hope you don’t fall to your death. Now there are several stone wall viewpoints you can enjoy. I was about a week to early to get to the bottom trail (close for falcon nesting) so I will to return another day to see it. So this was an out and back at about 8.5 miles and 1600ft total elevation gain.
