So the nice weather of the other day is gone and the temperature has dropped 20 degrees. Wind is now reaching gale force and it is rain heavy. The perfect weather to go to the coast and visit indoor places. We started our journey from Lori’s house and headed up the Washington side of the Columbia, a side we never travel on. This was to set us up so we could take the last operating ferry on the lower Columbia River across to Oregon. Our timing was pretty good as we only had to wait 10 minute before departing on the Oscar B. It only takes about 15 minute to cross and we were happy they had a passenger room we could view from. Becky loves going on ferry boats so this was a good start of the day.
Next we decide we needed a bathroom break and wouldn’t you know there was a restaurant that specializes in pies right where we got off the fairy. So we stopped in at The Berry Patch and had pie and coffee. I was pleasantly surprise they had a great collection of old photos from the days when the area was a major wood producer. A place I will add to my “When Timber Was King” list. From here we headed into Astoria and over the Astoria Bridge.
Once back on the Washington side of the river we drove up river to Dismal Nitch so name by the Core of Discovery when they were trapped here for eight days in a storm. This is now a rest area and the place where the Run/Walk of the Astoria Bridge starts from. This also set the theme for the rest of the day with our visit to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center on Cape Disappointment. Tell the story of Core of Discovery journey and of early light houses and Coast Guard rescue boats they also have large windows looking out to sea. A great place to enjoy a winter storm while staying warm and dry.
After a long visit at the center hunger over came us and we finished our coast visit at Buoy Brewery with Beer and Grub. Buoy not only has great beer and food but we got a window seat to watch the big ships arriving and departing. Then it was time to return home to prepare for another day of vacationing with Becky.
